At Winstanley Community Primary School, there is a step-by-step graduated model of action and intervention to support children with SEND. We ensure that all pupils in our school are treated with respect and have full access to a broad and balanced curriculum.
The 0-25 SEND Code of Practice (2015) identifies 'four broad areas of [special educational] need and support':
1. Communication and Interaction
Pupils with speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) have difficulty in communicating with others, often because they have difficulty saying what they want, they cannot understand what is being said to them, or they do not understand or use social rules of communication. Pupils with Autism related difficulties or a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), can have particular difficulties with social interaction - For more information click on the icon above.
2. Cognition and Learning
The school understands that learning difficulties cover a wide range of needs, such as moderate learning difficulties (MLD), severe learning difficulties (SLD) and profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD). Specific learning difficulties (SpLD), affect one or more specific aspects of learning. This encompasses a range of conditions such as dyslexia, dyscalculia and dyspraxia - For more information click on the icon above.
3. Sensory and/or Physical
Impairments that prevent or hinder pupils from using the school facilities, such as vision impairment (VI), do not necessarily have SEND. Some conditions can be age-related and can fluctuate over time - For more information click on the icon above.
4. Social and Emotional and Mental health
Pupils may experience a wide range of social and emotional difficulties that manifest themselves in many ways, including becoming withdrawn or isolated, or displaying challenging, disruptive and disturbing behaviour.
